The Science

What is PRP and How Does It Work?

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) is a concentration of your own blood's platelets — tiny cells loaded with growth factors that your body naturally uses to heal and regenerate tissue. When injected into the scalp, these growth factors stimulate hair follicles that have become miniaturised or dormant due to DHT sensitivity, aging, or other factors.

The key growth factors in PRP — including PDGF (Platelet-Derived Growth Factor), VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor), and IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor) — work by increasing blood supply to the follicle, prolonging the active growth phase (anagen), and encouraging previously dormant follicles to re-enter the growth cycle.

At Trabzon Hair Center, PRP is administered by Dr. Mert Çelik, our regenerative medicine specialist. We use a double-centrifugation protocol to achieve the highest possible platelet concentration — on average 4–5x normal blood concentration — for maximum therapeutic effect.

PRP is Best For

  • Early to mid-stage pattern hair loss
  • Patients wanting to avoid or delay surgery
  • Post-transplant recovery acceleration
  • Women with diffuse thinning
  • Anyone with reduced hair density
  • Maintaining transplant results long-term

Our PRP Protocol

Benefits

6 Advantages of PRP Treatment

1

All-Natural Growth Stimulation

PRP uses your own blood's growth factors — no synthetic chemicals or hormones. The concentrated platelets release natural proteins (PDGF, VEGF, IGF) that directly stimulate dormant hair follicles.

2

Accelerates Post-Transplant Growth

When combined with MicroFUE hair transplant, PRP significantly speeds up graft integration and early growth. Patients receiving PRP typically see visible new hair from month 3 rather than month 4–5.

3

Combats Ongoing Hair Thinning

PRP is highly effective for androgenetic alopecia (pattern baldness), helping to prolong the life of thinning follicles and increase hair shaft diameter — making hair appear visibly thicker.

4

No Downtime

PRP sessions are outpatient appointments taking 45–60 minutes. There is no recovery period — most patients return to normal activities immediately after. Mild scalp tenderness for 24 hours is the only common side effect.

5

Safe with Minimal Risk

Because PRP uses your own blood, there is virtually no risk of allergic reaction or rejection. The procedure has an excellent safety profile and has been used in medical settings since the 1980s.

6

Visible Results within Months

Most patients notice reduced hair shedding after 2–3 sessions. Noticeable thickness improvement is typically visible after 4–6 sessions. Results are maintained with periodic top-up sessions.

Step by Step

A PRP Session at Trabzon Hair Center

1

Blood Draw

A small blood sample (20–30ml) is taken from your arm — similar to a routine blood test. The volume is small and the procedure takes under 5 minutes.

2

Centrifugation

The blood sample is placed in a centrifuge machine that spins at high speed, separating the components. This concentrates the platelets in the plasma to 3–5x their normal concentration in whole blood.

3

PRP Preparation

The platelet-rich plasma layer is extracted into a sterile syringe, ready for application. No additives, chemicals, or foreign substances are used — only your own concentrated blood components.

4

Scalp Preparation

The scalp is cleansed and, where needed, topical anesthetic is applied to maximize comfort. Needle-free anesthesia is available for patients who prefer a completely pain-free experience.

5

PRP Injection / Application

PRP is administered into the scalp at the level of the hair follicles using micro-injections or a micro-needling device. The growth factors are delivered precisely where they can stimulate follicular activity.

6

Session Completion & Follow-Up

The session ends here — no dressings, no downtime. A treatment plan is agreed upon (typically 3–6 monthly sessions initially, followed by quarterly maintenance). Progress is monitored at each visit.

Conditions Treated

When is PRP Recommended?

Androgenetic alopecia (male & female pattern baldness)
Telogen effluvium (stress-related hair shedding)
Alopecia areata (patchy hair loss)
Post-pregnancy hair loss
Hair thinning after chemotherapy
Diffuse hair thinning with no clear cause
Post-transplant recovery acceleration
General scalp health and hair density improvement

PRP + MicroFUE Combination

We strongly recommend combining PRP with MicroFUE hair transplantation. PRP delivered at the time of transplant creates an optimal healing environment, reduces post-op inflammation, and has been shown to advance first graft growth by 4–6 weeks compared to transplant alone.

For patients maintaining results after transplant, ongoing quarterly PRP sessions help sustain the density achieved and protect remaining native hair from further thinning.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

QHow many PRP sessions do I need?

Most patients start with a course of 3–6 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart. After the initial course, maintenance sessions every 3–4 months are typically recommended to sustain results. Your doctor will design a personalised plan based on your response to treatment.

QDoes PRP hurt?

Mild discomfort from the micro-injections is normal. Many patients describe it as a slight stinging sensation. For more sensitive patients, we offer topical numbing cream or needle-free anesthesia delivery. The scalp tingling fades within an hour after the session.

QHow soon will I see results from PRP?

Most patients notice reduced shedding after 2–3 sessions. Visible improvement in hair thickness and density typically becomes apparent after 4–6 sessions. PRP results build progressively — patience and consistency are key.

QCan PRP be combined with hair transplant?

Absolutely — and we highly recommend it. We typically perform a PRP session during the hair transplant procedure, injecting PRP into the scalp before graft implantation. This creates an optimal growth environment for newly transplanted follicles, accelerating early attachment and first growth.

QIs PRP effective for everyone?

PRP shows good results for most patients with androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, and other common causes of hair thinning. Results are generally better in earlier-stage hair loss. Patients with very advanced baldness (Norwood 6–7) typically need hair transplant rather than PRP alone.

QAre the results permanent?

PRP does not permanently cure the underlying cause of hair loss (e.g. genetics or DHT sensitivity). Results are sustained with regular maintenance sessions. Without ongoing treatment, the benefits gradually diminish. Many patients continue with 2–4 sessions per year for sustained thickness.
